WHY CLIMATE CHANGE AN URGENT ISSUE
THE IMPACTS ARE ALREADY BEING FELT
All around the world, the impacts of climate change are being felt. Hotter, more frequent heat waves, stronger hurricanes, more wildfires, faster extinctions, severely melted icebergs, the mass decline of coral. All of these impacts are a direct result of climate change and will be exacerbated the longer we put off action.
EACH THRESHOLD BRINGS HARSHER CONSEQUENCES
As written in the Paris Accords, the goal of 196 signing countries was to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. In 2015, it was unthinkable that we would reach that threshold, but now its 50/50. Not only would crossing this threshold display a failure of government action on climate action, but each new threshold we create has more devastating consequences. For example, should we pass the 1.5°C threshold, scientists predict that the Arctic will become ice-free once every 100 years. However, if we pass the 2°C, they predict that the Arctic Ocean will go ice-free once every 10 years. The more barriers we pass, the more consequences we face, so it is paramount that we fix the issue now.
